Experimentation

Sound A/B tests on products, prices and messages, with decisions made by people

Planned · Year 3 (W4)Sold as: Add-onC-139

Experimentation tests changes to products, prices and messages with sound statistics before rollout and records decisions as evidence. Agents may design and analyse experiments but never declare winners.

What it does

Experimentation is an add-on eligible from W4. It brings A/B testing into the same data model as product work, marketing and the ROI Ledger, so a result is linked to the feature, issue and flag it affects.

Design

Experiment design captures a hypothesis, a primary metric from the semantic layer, guardrail metrics, the audience, variants and allocation, and planned duration. A sample size and duration calculator uses the metric's baseline, the minimum detectable effect, power and significance, and warns when traffic is too low. The primary metric and analysis plan are frozen at start. Changes after start create a new analysis version flagged as post-hoc.

Experiment types cover product UI and features, messaging (linking native Marketing A/B tests as records) and pricing. Pricing and eligibility experiments need approval and a verified consumer-law fact before they start. An AI review assist flags likely dark patterns and misleading price displays for human review. Experiments involving children's data are blocked unless verifiable parental consent flows exist (verify DPDP).

Run

Assignment uses deterministic bucketing by subject key through Feature Flags SDKs or a server-side Action, with exposure logging. Subjects are pseudonymous keys. Experiment data does not store party IDs unless the tenant links them under a recorded purpose. Consent-aware assignment skips subjects without the required tracking consent.

Analyse and decide

Analysis is fixed-horizon frequentist with confidence intervals, with a sequential testing option for early stopping and a sample ratio mismatch check. An SRM-flagged experiment cannot be decided until someone acknowledges it with a reason. Guardrails raise a stop proposal to the owner when thresholds are crossed.

The decision record of winner, no difference or stop, with rationale, is R3 and only a person can make it. Ship the winner proposes a flag rollout and closes linked issues or features.

GA additions

GA plans include variance reduction, long-term holdouts aligned with ROI Ledger holdouts for agent attribution, mutually exclusive layers with an overlap calendar, a learnings library published to Knowledge, a Bayesian analysis option and an analyst agent that proposes designs and drafts summaries but never decides.

Features

What Experimentation includes

Experiment design

Hypothesis, primary and guardrail metrics from the semantic layer, audience, variants and duration.

Sample size and duration

Calculator with low-traffic warnings.

Assignment

Deterministic bucketing via Feature Flags SDKs or server-side, with exposure logging.

Analysis

Fixed-horizon analysis with confidence intervals, sequential option and SRM check.

Guardrails

Thresholds that raise a stop proposal to the owner.

Human decision record

Winner, no difference or stop with rationale; agents cannot record it.

Experiment types

Product, messaging and pricing experiments, with pricing gated by approval and verified facts.

Ship the winner

Proposes a flag rollout and closes linked issues or features.

Holdouts and layers

Long-term holdouts and mutually exclusive layers with overlap warnings (GA).

Learnings library

Decisions and results published to Knowledge for reuse (GA).

Bayesian option and variance reduction

Posterior views alongside frequentist results and covariate adjustment (GA).

Consent-aware assignment

Client-side experiments skip subjects without required consent (GA).

Workflow

Design, run, decide, ship

  1. 1

Write the hypothesis and pick metrics

  2. 2

    Calculate sample size and duration

  3. 3

Pricing or high-risk experiments get R3 approval with a preview

  4. 4

Start and assign subjects through Feature Flags

  5. 5

Monitor SRM and guardrails; a breach sends a stop proposal to the owner

  6. 6

    Analyse at the planned end

  7. 7

A person records the decision, the winner rolls out behind a flag and learnings go to the library

AI

AI skills and Digital Employees

Experiment design proposal

Suggests hypothesis wording, metrics and audience.

SRM and guardrail monitoring

Statistical monitoring that sends stop proposals to the owner.

Result summary drafts

Drafts readouts; agents are blocked from declaring winners.

Pricing variant review assist

Flags possible dark patterns and misleading price displays for review.

Digital Employees that use this module

They act through the same governed Actions as people; risky steps wait for approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI agent decide the winner of a test?

No. Agents can design experiments and draft summaries, but the decision record is R3 and the Action Bus rejects it from agent identities.

Can we run pricing experiments?

Yes, but only with approval and a verified consumer-law fact recorded before start. Verify with counsel.

What stops us from peeking and changing metrics?

The primary metric and analysis plan freeze at start. Any later change creates a new analysis version flagged as post-hoc.
